Beyond Science Fiction: Continental "Smart Car" Technologies Put to Test at DARPA Urban ChallengeFor some, this weekend's DARPA Urban Challenge at the former George Air Force Base in California may appear to be...

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Oct. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Continental Automotive Systems is a key sponsor of the Carnegie Mellon University Tartan Racing team. The global supplier is providing an array of active safety sensors for the school's robotic vehicle entry and an embedded engineer with expertise in "sensor data fusion" that enables "Boss" to recognize the total traffic environment. Similar sensor technology from Continental can be found on a growing number of current production models. Continental also is supplying Tartan Racing with custom-made General brand Grabber UHP tires with ContiSeal technology that protects against penetration by nails and screws.

The evolution of the driving experience for motorists is, indeed, well underway. Continental's vision is to eliminate accident fatalities and serious injuries altogether. The DARPA Urban Challenge and other efforts to refine Continental intelligent-vehicle technologies in life-like settings are directly aligned with the business strategy to be the world's leader in active safety systems and make automobiles smarter, safer and more efficient.
