Timing and Scoring System Using RFID Tags Obsoletes Traditional Transponders

FERNLEY, Nev., Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Zoomius Inc. today announced the success of the first race weekend run completely with its revolutionary RFID timing and scoring system.

A combined Z2/USGPRU motorcycle race weekend at the Reno-Fernley circuit near Reno, Nevada on the weekend of August 23-24th featured the first use of the Zoomius TITAN RFID timing and scoring system to manage a complete race event.

The event combined practice sessions, qualifying sessions, sprint races and an endurance race, all of which were completely managed, timed and scored by the Zoomius TITAN RFID race management system. Live timing and scoring, results and lap-times were available to all racers with a wi-fi enabled computer.

"The race weekend was a complete success," said Chris Keane, CEO of Zoomius Inc. "Our long-term research and development has paid off with a great result. Our receivers at start/finish, pit-in and pit-out gave everyone -- staff and racers alike -- a complete and accurate picture of everything that was happening at any moment."

RFID tags are low-cost, disposable labels that significantly reduce the cost of outfitting each vehicle. The entry list for the Z2/USGPRU weekend featured just under one hundred motorcycles, which were completely outfitted with tags for less than $40 -- less than one thousandth of the cost of outfitting all vehicles with traditional powered transponders.

Zoomius' patent-pending RFID timing system has been in development for several years and has solved significant problems yet to be discovered by other companies who have recently made forays into RFID timing systems.

"There have been huge hurdles to overcome since we began development in 2002. Our latest technology has shown no problem reliably scoring vehicles traveling in excess of 180 mph and in large clusters such as at the start of a race," continued Keane. "Actually, 180 mph isn't a limit of our RFID system; we just can't get our bikes to go faster on the front straight at Reno-Fernley."

The first successful race weekend has demonstrated that RFID timing and scoring is more than just an interesting concept and that the technology is primed for widespread acceptance into the racing community. The system is portable, easy to set up and fully integrated with the industry-leading TIGER registration management software from Zoomius.

The system works equally well for motorcycles and cars.
